SEMINARIA, Maranola, Italia, August 24, 2013
One year after the second edition of the festival, SEMINARIA returns to Maranola to invite everyone to take action, to play, and to lend their breath to art.
Following an intense period during which around forty artists engaged with the village and its inhabitants, SEMINARIA has chosen, for its 2013 event, to relaunch its research starting from the perspective of a foreign artist.
PLAY is a site-specific project by Alexandra Dementieva for Piazza Ricca in Maranola—an illuminated, interactive work that lights up through the breath of the audience. The original project, presented at the 2011 Venice Biennale, plays on the universality of pictographic language. It is oriented upward, like an invitation for extraterrestrials to land and join us.
In Maranola, PLAY, installed on the façade of the town hall, faces the entire gulf and lights up like a beacon, guiding seafarers to SEMINARIA. The hope is that as long as someone is willing to play, to interact, to question themselves, SEMINARIA and Maranola will never go dark.
This is a symbolic act—toward the reactivation of cultural spaces and activities, to create and continue reflecting on the reality that surrounds us. PLAY is an opportunity to restart and to reinvent, together, a new form of participation in art, through an active presence rooted in the territory but with its head in the clouds.
