CONTINUUM: Sacred Art and Contemporary Visions brings together historical works from the Museo d’Arte Sacra della Val d’Arbia and contemporary works from the Frants Family Collection, creating a dialogue across centuries around different approaches to the sacred, perception, memory, and the invisible.
Located in Palazzo Ricci Socini in Buonconvento, the Museo d’Arte Sacra della Val d’Arbia preserves an important collection of sacred art from the churches of the Val d’Arbia, tracing the development of Sienese art from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century. Its collection includes works by major figures of the Sienese tradition, among them Duccio di Buoninsegna, Pietro Lorenzetti, Luca di Tommè, Andrea di Bartolo, Sano di Pietro, and Matteo di Giovanni. One of its highlights is Duccio’s Madonna col Bambino, dating to around 1290–1295.
The exhibition presents works from the Frants Family Collection by Valentina Povarova, Elizaveta Alexandrova, Elena Gubanova & Ivan Govorkov, and Gelya Pisareva, placing their practices in conversation with the museum’s historical collection and extending its reflections on presence, mortality, memory, and what lies beyond the visible.
Rather than opposing sacred and contemporary art, CONTINUUM reveals connections between different periods and artistic languages. Abstraction, geometry, color, the human figure, landscape, light, technology, movement, memory, and absence become different ways of approaching what cannot easily be seen or expressed in words.
