Ying-Yang
Ying 7’10”
Yang 6’01”
Ying (Human activity)
Improvisation on acoustic guitar with electromagnetic pickup. The guitar is prepared with thin round metal through and on top of the strings and bowed with a violin bow and copper pipe. There are 2 loop stations connected between the guitar and the amp/speaker. This enables 2 independent loops and mixing of loops.
Yang (No human activity)
An 8-meter-long string is amplified and the sound signal is transmitted back into the string using an exciter, which reproduces sound frequencies in the form of vibrations. So the system generates feedback. Two springs are clipped to the string and swing (more or less) in pace with the vibrations of the string.
Petra Dubach and Mario van Horrik are Dutch artists working with movement and sound; identical disciplines for them. No movement = no sound = nothing. Curiosity is their driving force. The result from that is their richness, which feeds their hunger for more.
A logo depicting a boy swinging a bullroarer perfectly embodies the essence of their work: he has to move his body to create the sound, using feedback between body and mind to set it in motion, sustain it, and play with it.
