Our long-time friends and partners at ARé FEST, led by Marine Karoyan, will host this year’s festival in Yerevan from May 3 to 15. The 2025 edition, themed REALITY SHOW, will feature a dynamic program of performances, visual installations, discussions, and workshops across various venues throughout the city.

ARé Fest is a performing arts festival that explores the fluid boundaries between performance and visual arts, embracing experimental and unconventional forms of expression. The festival brings together acclaimed international and local artists, fosters global partnerships, serves as a hub for creative exchange, highlights the best of Armenia’s contemporary scene, and nurtures the development of groundbreaking new work.

With technical support from CYLAND MediaArtLab, the festival will open with a video installation by Garush Melkonyan at the Institute of Contemporary Art, on view from May 3 to 15.

GARUSH MELKONYAN

The Interview, 2017

3- channel video installation

Curator: Nazareth Karoyan

At the heart of the installation is an interview with the visual TV codes. It is in fact a generative video containing about forty questions and about forty answers. From these data, the software decides in a random manner the order of questions and answers, constantly renewing the interview in an infinite way.

By putting into play the place and the role of the spectator in the work as well as the manner in which the progression of the interview is generated, the artwork questions the shaping of an artifce, be it image or language. The illusion that the images or the support on which they are projected is supposed to be constructed illuminates its own disappearance and leads to perceiving the work as an absurd montage leading to the fight of meaning.
