CYFEST 15: Vulnerability x Art Night Venice

June 22, 2024

8—11 pm

CREA - One Contemporary Art Space, Giudecca 211-b, 30133 Venice

As part of All Forces Balance Program curated by Sara Bizai, Gaia De Santi. Filippo Vane, and Victoria Fadeeva.

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming participation in Art Night Venice, taking place 22 June 2024.

Art Night Venice is an initiative designed and organized by Ca' Foscari University in collaboration with the Municipality of Venice. With each passing year, this annual cultural event is gaining more recognition, with over a hundred distinguished city institutions joining in. Art Night facilitates short-term and long-standing creative collaborations throughout Venice while strengthening connections between the city and the university.

Our Art Night program features two performances and an installation. Nao Nishihara uses his own body and self-built machines to explore modes of perception of sound, space, and human sensibilities. Take Care of Yourself by Sara Cecconi invites visitors to perform simple actions to remove boundaries and gain freedom so that everything has a right to exist and everyone can be themselves. Irina Korina reunites the decor of late modernist public interiors and her childhood memories in the form of architectural-related installation made of inflatable fabric sculptures and furniture. All three works are in dialogue with the CYFEST 15 ongoing exhibition, exploring the theme of Vulnerability manifested in perception, relation, material, or subjectivity.

Nao Nishihara, Venice, Acoustic Sound Performance

Nao Nishihara is an artist and active practitioner of sound activities, sound art, performance, recording, and instrument production. An object or human body inevitably produces sound. Nao explores these sounds and attempts to show them through their activities using self-built machines and his body.

«My performance is an abstract musical expression in a friendly street performance style, with a drum on my back and a flute in my hand. The music I create is diverse, including contemporary, pop, hardcore punk, and traditional music from around the world. The live acoustic sound and the space prove our existence and sensations.» — Nao Nishihara

Sara Cecconi, Take Care of Yourself, Performance

Sara Cecconi is an Italian born artist based in Venice, where she is soon to graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts. Her artistic research examines the human body and in particular the relationship a human being has with oneself and with society. Her art trigger emotional reflection and hence creates a contact with one’s intimate space in which fears, impulses, insecurities and fragilities are hidden.

Take care of yourself was born following a reflection on the spiritual balance: each of us has something that prevents us from living in complete peace with ourselves. Thus, this performance aims to induce the spectator to reflect on what prevents them from finding a balance through a representation that is not only visual but also allegorical. The public, called to cut the threads that trap Sara in an uncomfortable position, frees the artist so that she can return to an upright position. The transition from the distorted position to the standing one is the first image through which it conveys the message of the work. The concept of balance reaches its fullest meaning in the act of expressing one’s torment and cutting the thread symbolically alluding to a condition of freedom from discomfort and to the recovery of one’s own inner stability in the person carrying out the action. Therefore, Take care of yourself, as the title suggests, brings to mind a practice that is often forgotten in an increasingly frenetic and fleeting life: being comfortable with oneself.

Irina Korina, On vacation, Installation

Irina Korina is an installation artist. She has been actively engaged with theatre practice and has had a number of exhibitions since 1999. As a stage designer, she collaborated with many theaters, from the beginning of 2000-s started working in cinema. In 2017 her installation was presented within the main project of the 57th Venice Biennale. Her solo shows were presented in GRAD foundation (London, UK), Brooklyn Academy of Music (New York, USA), within Steirischer Herbst festival (Graz, Austria). Korina took part in numerous group shows, including M HKA museum (Antwerp, Belgium), Saatchi gallery (London, UK), and Kühlhaus space (Berlin, Germany).

The installation «On Vacation» consists of inflatable fabric sculptures («relaxing columns») and furniture and recalls the artist’s childhood, trips with her parents to the museums, cartoon characters, caricatures from magazines, children's books, and cinema.

CYFEST 15 is organized by CYLAND International MediaArtLab. The project's general sponsor is One Market Data. The project is made possible in collaboration with
